The Maker, the Wool and the Process

The Maker

I am Sandra, the designer/maker at the heart of Pom Shanty Knitwear.

I live and work from my home studio in London but originally come from a small settlement in New Zealand called Tikitiki. Growing up there was a unique and culturally enriching experience, as is calling London home now.

Both places inform my pattern designs which emphasise geometric motifs and line play.

Inspired by the intricate beauty of tukutuku panels found in Māori meeting houses and the patterns found in iconic buildings such as Battersea Power Station, Pom Shanty is my way of bridging where I come from and where I am now.

The Wool

Merino lambswool is known for its softness, warmth and luxurious feel. The fine fibres of lambswool provide exceptional insulation and warmth and its natural breathability allows moisture to evaporate away from the body.

The perfect choice for keeping you cosy in the colder seasons.

Every Pom Shanty piece is made with high quality premium yarn spun and dyed in the UK resulting in elegantly tactile accessories rich in texture and feel.

The Process

As an independent maker I take pride in curating and crafting each lambswool accessory from start to finish. Every piece begins on a hand powered vintage knitting machine.

From here they are pinned out and steamed (blocked) and left to rest for a while to let the fibres settle into their new arrangement.

Following on from this, a delicate laundering process softens the yarn, coaxing the fibres to meld and gently bloom, creating the characteristic softness of the wool.
